The Dynamics of Stat Training for your Viking Mercenary - Strength

The Atlantica Viking has two particular weapons in his arsenal, which are worth tailoring your Viking stat-training strategies to. The first is his Frozen Axe spell, which really can be a tide-turning ability when used correctly, and the second is his standard axe attack, which when used by a powerful Viking can inflict some serious damage on enemy units.

For his standard attack, the best stat to increase is Strength. I would say that Strength is probably the most important stat to increase on a Atlantica Viking, simply because his standard attack is so strong. The higher your Viking's strength, the more damage he will do

with his axe attack, both to your main target and to the units to the left and right of your main target. It's worth noting here as well, that it is worthwhile to attack the middle unit in an opponent's formation with this attack, so that 3 enemy units receive damage instead of only 2 if you were to attack a unit within a side column of the enemy formation.

Intelligence Increases on your Atlantica Viking

For Freezing Axe, the best thing to do is to increase your Viking's Intelligence. This will increase the damage done by this attack, but not the duration of the spell itself. This increase is rather small, but it is worth keeping in mind when considering which stats to increase on your Atlantica Viking.

Another thing worth noting is a somewhat unusual mechanic in Atlantica Online, where when you heal a unit, the healed unit's Intelligence stat actually plays a role in the strength of the heal. The higher the healed unit's Intelligence, the stronger the unit will be healed for when a Shaman or Oracle heals them. This is probably the only game I've seen where this occurs, but testing has shown that this is the case. While it may seem worthwhile to use refund vials to refund any Intelligence increases for possibly more useful stats, in the long run it may be worthwhile to keep some Intelligence increases on your Viking.

Other Stats Worth Increasing

Other stats worth increasing on your Viking are Vitality and Dexterity, to increase his overall survivability. The low Magic Defense of the Viking is his true weakness, but you can only increase Magic Defense with equipment,

not with growth vials, which are the only item which can increase a unit's stats.

In the following articles in this guide to the Atlantica Online open beta, we will explore the Viking's magical abilities. We will then wrap up with a look at the long-term viability of this dynamic melee class D mercenary.

Atlantica Viking Stats

The Viking's stats are the biggest influence on the viability of the class in the long run. At the higher levels, his extemely poor Magic Defense ends up making him quite vulnerable to magic attacks. There are multiple class C mercenaries with powerful magic attacks which can hit any unit in the opposing formation in the late game of Atlantica Online, and once those mercenaries arrive on the scene, the Viking's lifespan tends to shorten significantly on the battlefield.

Among the Viking's strengths are his high Strength stat, allowing for high-damage attacks, and his reasonably high Defense and Vitality. These stats

allow the Viking to tank pretty decently in the first 40 or so levels, but by the mid-game there are several other mercenaries with much better stats for front-line positioning in your formation.

The Viking's stats are as follows:

  • Strength: 330
  • Intelligence: 140
  • Dexterity: 110
  • Vitality: 310
  • Defense: 280
  • Magic Defense: 50
  • Action Power: 70-90

The Viking's main weak point is his low Magic Defense. In the later game, most attacks are magic-based, and many are area-of-effect speels, so the Viking ultimately ends up taking large amounts of damage with very little effort by the enemy. For an Axeman main, though, the Magic Defense stat is much higher, making the Axeman a really great option for your main.

Equipping Your Atlantica Viking

As far as equipment goes, it's a very good idea to give your Viking the best axe possible. The Viking attacks horizontally in Atlantica Online, hitting both your selected target and the targets on the sides of your target. If you've killed a unit in the front ranks of your opponent's formation, this can be a good way to hit targets which would otherwise be protected from physical attacks by units in the ranks in front of them. Additionally, the Viking's attacks are powerful, and using a better axe simply magnifies that power.

In terms of armor and accessories, It is recommendable to give the Viking equipment which increases his strength and his ability to stay in the fight for as long as possible. Items which increase Strength, Vitality, Defense, and Magic Defense are indispensible for this. The Viking's real power in most fights is his skill Freezing Axe. Because of the power of this skill, your opponent will probably choose the Viking as one of the first targets to take

down, particularly in PvP. So it is a good idea to use equipment which boosts his defensive stats, to increase his survivability.

In the next section of this guide, we will go into which stats are most worth training on your Viking, to ensure maximum power and survivability from this useful mercenary.

Which Viking Skills Should You Train?

With the long-term viability of the Viking greatly reduced by his poor Magic Defense statistic, it becomes a much easier decision as to which skills are most worth training for your Viking mercenary. The Viking has only one skill which is easy to come by in the early levels of the game, the Freezing Axe skill. This skill is also the Viking's most important skill, by far. Because your Viking will become useless in the later levels, it doesn't make sense to train the more expensive skills like Breakdown, Guard Dispel, and Deadly Strike.

One strategy which may be recommedable would

be the 1 book training strategy, in which you train 1 level of each of these 3 skills, thereby adding them to your arsenal, with very little expense. Ultimately combining this strategy with pumping Freezing Axe up as high as possible may be your best bet. When your Viking's turn comes up in battle, the skill which you are going to want to use 95% of the time will be the Freezing Axe skill, so why not train the most used skill?

The story is entirely different if your main is the Axeman, the Viking main class. In this case, your Axeman is going to be around for a good long while, and this is a great opportunity to have some of the more useful Class D melee mercenary skills with you into the highest levels of the game.

The Axeman Difference

The difference with an Axeman main, is that not only do you have much greater survivability due to a high Magic Defense, but you also are definitely going to be having your main toon all through the game. This changes the dynamics involved in which skills you should train, on your Axeman main.

The best choices are definitely Freezing Axe, and Guard Dispel. Guard Dispel is a greatly useful skill all through the span of your time in Atlantica Online, if you are into PvP. People who do not have class D melee mercenaries in the later levels will not have this skill, and it is actually an incredibly powerful skill in PvP battles.

As for Breakdown, it would be worth training up if you intend to have an Archer, Artilleryman, or Gunner into the late game. Artillerymen may be worth keeping around for stun AoE builds.. they really are the only choice among those 3 which I would recommend keeping into the later levels of the game. If you do, you can combine Breakdown with the Artilleryman's Chaos Wind spell, to create the Destructive Wind spell, a powerful spell which damages every unit in the enemy formation, at the beginning of every enemy turn.

Breakdown may be worth training up, even if you only intend to use it to directly damage the enemy.

Finally, Deadly Strike is actually a great skill to have on a main. If a battle is very close, and your main is near death, facing off against a few enemies who are also near death, the Deadly Strike skill could turn the tide of the battle. With this skill, you're able to deliver a very powerful strike against an opponent, ensuring that they die in that round. A main Axeman is already capable of doing great damage, so this skill may be worth training up as well.

Vikings Summarized

Ultimately, the Viking is a powerful mercenary, at least in the early game of Atlantica Online. The Axeman is a great main, with many of

the top PvPers using them quite successfully. Vikings are indispensible in the early game, and the Axeman has some great skills which are great to have around in the late game. Enjoy the game, and feel free to peruse our other guides on the Atlantica Online mercenaries here on Bright Hub.
