Historical / Legendary Source: Joan of Arc, also known as 'the Maid of Orleans,' was a 15th century Catholic saint, and national heroine of France. A peasant girl born in Eastern France, Joan led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, claiming divine guidance, and was indirectly responsible for the coronation of King Charles VII. She was captured by the English, tried by an ecclesiastical court and burned at the stake when she was nineteen years old. Twenty-four years later, the Holy See reviewed the decision of the ecclesiastical court, found her innocent, and declared her a martyr. She was beatified in 1909 and later canonized in 1920.
Joan asserted that she had visions from God that told her to recover her homeland from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent her to the siege at Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence when she overcame the dismissive attitude of veteran commanders and lifted the siege in only nine days. Several more swift victories led to Charles VII's coronation at Reims and settled the disputed succession to the throne.
Joan of Arc has remained an important figure throughout Western culture. From Napoleon to the present, French politicians of all leanings have invoked her memory. Major writers and composers who have created works about her include Shakespeare, Voltaire, Schiller, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Twain, and Shaw. Depictions of her continue in film, television, video games, song, and dance.
Pros:
- Spectacularly high defense. The Lady Knight will, in decent equipment, very quickly find a place in your front line even at lower levels in PvE.
- On top of having spectacularly high defense, she also gets a shield. Which, of course, means that her spectacularly high defense is spectacularly higher than that.
- Extraordinarily high AP recovery, 75~90 to begin and rising to 75~95 after the Noble Knight upgrade.
- Light Slash is fantastic. Imagine Flame Sword, if Flame Sword could hit two people in a row and did great damage to anything you tried using it on.
- Great damage output, not excellent, but great.
- Great vitality, which guarantees good HP at higher levels (particularly with melee equipment on).
- Solid magic defense, not too high but it definitely prevents it from foddering to magical attacks.
- Strange to give this as a pro, but: by the time you get her, you can reset Freyja's Necklace and the Lady Knight quest over and over so that she can get a humongous amount of experience in a very short amount of time, which will put her at a competitive level in no time whatsoever.
Cons:
- She uses a sword. That means that she hits one character. So her high damage is limited to a single target.
- No good skill variety, and no Deadly Strike, which means that she doesn't have a clutch emergency move when she is near death (a situation which, granted, won't happen very often). In all reality, this is okay because Light Slash does a ridiculously high amount of damage.
- Limited use in builds where AoE is the name of the game, which is probably not that much of a fault.
- In fact, it's difficult to find faults in the Lady Knight. That in and of itself means she's kind of broken, which is not a good thing.
Abilities:
- Light Slash: Two targets in a line, does high skill-based damage. 120 AP cost. (9/10)
Breakdown: It's really, really hard to not like the Lady Knight. She has fantastic survivability, great HP, does good damage and has a fantastic skill. She fits in every single front line that requires any amount of defense, mixes well with a Prophet, does great when Seth's Will is dropped on her... I could pretty much go on for hours here. All of her pros point at her being pretty much the natural evolution that your Front Line will move to achieve.
Unlike the Swordsman, who is directly countered by Spearmen, the Lady Knight does not quite have so much of a problem sitting there and taking hits. Yes, they do still take a large amount of damage from them, but they will definitely outlast your standard Swordsman in the front line, and do a lot more damage in return to boot. In reality, any high-defense front line build would do well to eventually pick up a Lady Knight after reaching the requisite level. In addition to that, it would be a good idea to make sure you've leveled your Swordsman to 100, so that it can be sent off independently to fetch you the other mercenary you are going to want, the Spartan. The Lady Knight is key to high-defense formations and you would be out of your mind if you decided to ignore her.
Example Build:
This is another one of those mercenaries that don't require or need an example build. Look at any number of builds that requires a Swordsman in the front that will eventually be replaced by a Lady Knight, and just swap one of them with her. Congratulations, a build with a Lady Knight in it.
Total Grade: 9/10
